2026 RT Vermont & Mass
Hello again!
We left NH and headed to VT. We stayed in Waterbury, not far from Stowe. This area has a lot of ski resorts.
On Friday we visited Montpelier, VT. We even did a tour of their cute little State House.
Q: how many U.S. presidents hail from Vermont?

It was clear enough to see Mt. Washington in New Hampshire.
Sticky's Maple Works. We learned all about how they harvest the sap and ultimately sell syrup. This company taps over 2,000 maple trees and literally tubes them together to collect the maple sap. This is one of the machines involved:
Alchemist Brewery. What a gorgeous day to hang out at a lovely brewery.
Finally, Maple Creemee!!! We were told about the place to stop from the bike guy we talked to. Funny to find out it is an easy walk from our place!
On Sunday the weather was crappy so we just slept in and hung around our apartment until around 3:00. We headed to Burlington based on an improving weather forecast.
But also somehow optimistic that they would have crowds of people and need this many port-a-potties.
On Saturday we took a scenic drive and made some strategic stops.

We later saw the tubing in the forest running in and among the trees. Amazing!
I was routing us to the World's Tallest File Cabinet when Carsten asked me to route us to a winery on an island in Lake Champlain. He didn't know about the file cabinet ...

Can I just say now that I was never optimistic?! There were three patrons in the place and TWO OF THEM WERE DRINKING BEER! Ugh! 😩
After trying the first white I went and asked for a glass of water to cleanse the palette. She started to put ice in the (plastic) cup and I told her just water. She gave me water explaining that it smelled because it was well water but that it was safe to drink. Ummmm.... No palette cleansing.
The wine was just trying too hard. Carsten kept telling me it was ok, maybe my cold was messing with my taste buds. Dear reader, I was concerned he had had a stroke. It was just bad.
Should have stuck with the file cabinet!
We continued into Burlington and had a little walk on the shore of Lake Champlain.
Monday the weather was better and we went and rented bikes for a ride along the Lamoille River Rail Trail.
We walked around in Stowe a bit, really just to stretch our tired legs (the ride ended up being 35 miles).
On Monday afternoon we toured the Ben & Jerry's factory in Waterbury. It was very interesting and of course we got ice cream. It was a new flavor - raspberry with fudge.
As we leave Vermont and head south, we both have now visited all 50 of the states.
As we begin the trip South and West our first stop is in South Lee, Massachusetts. It is in the Berkshires. We chose an interesting hike called Bash-Bish Falls. Our legs are a bit tired from so much hiking and especially the long bike ride so we took the long but less elevation gain route that actually starts in NY.
The falls got their name after the legend of a beautiful Indian maiden who was sent over the falls to her death as punishment for suspected adultery. I'm sure the dude involved was punished too ... Ugh.
This picture doesn't convey it but this is the highest falls in Massachusetts, a whopping 60 feet.
There will be one more blog after this one, only four more "sleeps" until we are home.
