2026 RT Halifax

Hello from Halifax (and surrounding area). We are here for seven days! It is good to be settled in one spot for a little longer. Our place is very nice, right on St. Margaret's Bay about 40 min from Halifax. Our view over the water:


We went to Lunenburg on Thursday. It is a cute little town known for its Victorian era houses painted lovely, bright colors along the waterfront and several streets up. There were many shops and restaurants to explore. 



I got caught in a lobster trap!



This sign made me a bit homesick. I must admit the BBQ we got there was tasty!



On Friday we had to wait for some hard rain showers to pass. Once the skies cleared up we went up to Halifax to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. There was a Titanic exhibit.

This chair is an original from the Titanic, retrieved from the ocean by one of the rescue ships. Passengers on deck threw them overboard so that those in the water had something to hold onto.  The wicker/cane seat is not original. Many of the rescue ships came out of Halifax.


This was interesting, they believe that the steel used to build the Titanic was high in sulphur which becomes brittle in cold temps.



This was an art installation on the Harbor walk.


Back to our place, some time to just hang out with the lovely Svenni.


Saturday in Halifax is market day. We got up and into town to see what goodies we could find. It was a nice market but the weather was garbage. We did climb up to the Citadel and witness the "noon gun". Basically, they shoot off a cannon everyday at noon. There was a museum about Halifax. Did you know that someone from Halifax is called a Haligonian. I would not have guessed that!





We learned about a terrible explosion 💥 💥 💥 that happened in the harbor December 6, 1917. A Norwegian relief ship and a French munitions ship collided. The munitions ship caught fire and burned for twenty-five minutes before 2,925 tons of explosives in her hold detonated.

The massive shockwave flattened 2 square kilometers of the city. Over 1,600 were killed and over 9,000 injured and over 6,000 left homeless! This was the largest man-made explosion prior to the first atomic bomb.

On Sunday we spent some time in Peggy's Cove. This is a cute town with some beautiful landscape and a lighthouse!






We found local scallops and clams for lunch - delicious!!

Monday morning we woke to a gorgeous sky and no rain clouds in sight! Yay!!

We headed to Polly's Cove for a little hike. It was amazing to see all the granite boulders just strewn about like toys. The powerful glaciers so leave their mark.





Truly a Sisyphus task, rearranging the rocks.

We finished the day with a little Cornhole tourney! Falk and Svenni were rookies but they beat me and Carsten!


Tuesday morning we debated another hike but finally decided on a bike ride. We found Salt Air Bikes near the Trans-Canada Trail. Sadly they only had one e-bike available so three of us had to pedal with no assist!

The trail was very interesting with water all around us.






Looks like we drowned on the western end of the trail. We were on a 2 mile long bike bridge and turned around halfway.

As we leave Halifax tomorrow and say goodbye to Falk and Svenni, I leave you with my view at first light.

Hello dear family and friends! Carsten and I send the very best greetings to you and all those you treasure. We are thankful for the community we have been blessed with, both near and far. 2025 was a hard year for us. We had no idea back in January what the new year would bring. Life is always full of ups and downs but my mom's rapid health decline and death just floored us. A loss like this reminds you of how precious life is and how important it is to be thankful for every moment we are given. We are navigating the holidays like a soldier thru a minefield - no idea when grief will knock us down again. It is hard to write but, besides Mom's death, we are all doing well.  Austin and Jamie moved back to Houston after 18 months in Detroit. They bought a house about 1.5 miles from Marieke and Alex. Diving Galapagos - part 2

Hello again from the Tiburon!  We had three dives this morning and are now making our way from Wolf Island to Cousins Rock. Tomorrow will be the final dives. Seals Sheri and a shark When we are at a dive site looking for sharks we basically go down to 35-60 feet, depending on the terrain, and settle in and wait. That's me (Sheri) on the left wedged in next to the big rock. There is current to contend with - it is actually harder than you would think to stay in one place. Massive schools of fish. Sharks! More fish! Hammerhead Shark Guineafowl Pufferfish  Dolphin The day is done (yesterday at Darwin Island). Turtle Ocean Sunfish (Mola-Mola, about 6 feet tall without the fins) Today we will have a celebration when we cross the Equator (for the fourth and final time). Tradition dictates a champagne toast! Icelandic Road Trip!!!

Hello from Iceland! After visiting with Carsten's parents and friends in Germany, we left on Sunday with a quick overnight in Amsterdam. We went to a bar to watch the Germany football ⚽ match. Carsten was representing! Now we are in Iceland! Our flight landed at 7:20am - first stop Duty Free shopping for beer and wine. The VAT (tax) here is 24%, my guidebook said to buy booze at the airport! We have a lovely Dacia Duster rental car that will be our ride around the Ring Road in Iceland for the next four weeks! Get ready for lots of waterfalls and amazing scenery! We drove out to a Thermal Bath/Spa called Laugaras Lagoon. It was super relaxing. Like the Blue Lagoon, the waters are naturally heated by the underground thermal heat.  Also a dry sauna. There was a steam sauna, but if I wanted that level of humidity I would have stayed in Houston for the summer. A cautionary tale: we have a waterproof case for a cell phone.
