2026 RT - Portsmouth area

Hi,

We are hanging out in Kittery, Maine which is right across the river from Portsmouth, NH. This is a beautiful part of New England!

Friday (8/21) we rented e-bikes from Papa Wheelie and rode south into New Hampshire. We found an old covered bridge and had lunch at an apple orchard. It was a lovely day!




Some parts of the trail aren't quite complete!


My bike frustrated me a bit because there was not really a gear that allowed me to pedal at a reasonable pace. My legs were just spinning! The terrain was flat, no need for lots of low gears but a higher one would have been great. I did tell this story to Papa at the store so that he could fix it - he gave us some money back - totally unexpected!

We had a great day!

Saturday (8/22) we went north into Maine to Ogunquit. They have a walk along the coast called "marginal way". It is not too long, very scenic.




After a gyro for lunch we headed to Kennebunkport to see St. Anne-by-the-sea Episcopal Church. This church is made completely of local boulders. Massive!

Getting through Kennebunkport was a mess, it was jam-packed with people. Took us a minute to remember it is Saturday! LOL - retired life!

We decided to give the local BBQ a try at the Lost Cowboy in Portsmouth. We got the meat plate.


All this was $42. Felt like a good deal. The ribs were excellent, the sausage too. Brisket and Pulled Pork were very good. The other meat was burnt bacon ends, good but a bit fatty. Onion rings, coleslaw and excellent pickled cucumber salad. 
They had three kinda of BBQ sauce, one sweet, one vinegar and one spicy. All delicious. The only sore spot for me was that, without informing me, they charged for each of my iced tea refills. What???!!! Ugh!

This was a nice intro into NH and Maine. We will spend more time on the way back South after Canada.

The drive on 8/23 was, happily, uneventful if a bit boring. The crossing was easy - we declared our spices, etc and had no issue. We changed our car speedometer display from miles-per-hour to kilometers-per-hour so we are good to explore Canada.

Funny, the place we are staying feels like visiting grandma - lots of (dated) pictures and knick-knacks. Too many products in the bathrooms. LOL

The location is good and the beds seem comfortable. The kitchen has everything we need, including ancient pyrex and Tupperware. It will be fine. 

Tomorrow we go to Moncton to pick up Falk and Svenni from the airport. Scenes from Canada coming up soon!

Hello dear family and friends! Carsten and I send the very best greetings to you and all those you treasure. We are thankful for the community we have been blessed with, both near and far. 2025 was a hard year for us. We had no idea back in January what the new year would bring. Life is always full of ups and downs but my mom's rapid health decline and death just floored us. A loss like this reminds you of how precious life is and how important it is to be thankful for every moment we are given. We are navigating the holidays like a soldier thru a minefield - no idea when grief will knock us down again. It is hard to write but, besides Mom's death, we are all doing well.  Austin and Jamie moved back to Houston after 18 months in Detroit. They bought a house about 1.5 miles from Marieke and Alex. Getting there.... and itinerary

Good morning from Amsterdam!! Travel is so fun and romantic (cue sappy music).... Not! Leaving Houston was fine and the flight was smooth to Istanbul. We both managed to sleep a bit on the overnight flight (thank you Ambien). Our connection to Amsterdam was a bit late leaving but no problem, or so we thought.... We get to Amsterdam late and it seems as though everyone is experiencing their first day on the job.  I was watching the person driving the jetway - they had no idea where the door was to the plane might be. That took a hot minute. Finally off the plane and walking 1,000 steps to immigration only to be turned around and led back almost to where we started - very odd. So now our entire plane full of people slam the one, lonely immigration officer.  There was a moment when they had an agent there to open another lane only he couldn't open the door. Diving Galapagos - part 2

Hello again from the Tiburon!  We had three dives this morning and are now making our way from Wolf Island to Cousins Rock. Tomorrow will be the final dives. Seals Sheri and a shark When we are at a dive site looking for sharks we basically go down to 35-60 feet, depending on the terrain, and settle in and wait. That's me (Sheri) on the left wedged in next to the big rock. There is current to contend with - it is actually harder than you would think to stay in one place. Massive schools of fish. Sharks! More fish! Hammerhead Shark Guineafowl Pufferfish  Dolphin The day is done (yesterday at Darwin Island). Turtle Ocean Sunfish (Mola-Mola, about 6 feet tall without the fins) Today we will have a celebration when we cross the Equator (for the fourth and final time). Tradition dictates a champagne toast!
