Christmas Greetings

Hello dear family and friends!

Carsten and I send the very best greetings to you and all those you treasure. We are thankful for the community we have been blessed with, both near and far.

2025 was a hard year for us. We had no idea back in January what the new year would bring. Life is always full of ups and downs but my mom's rapid health decline and death just floored us. A loss like this reminds you of how precious life is and how important it is to be thankful for every moment we are given.

We are navigating the holidays like a soldier thru a minefield - no idea when grief will knock us down again.

It is hard to write but, besides Mom's death, we are all doing well. 

Austin and Jamie moved back to Houston after 18 months in Detroit. They bought a house about 1.5 miles from Marieke and Alex. We are overjoyed that they are home and the dogs are happy too! Austin and Jamie are rooting for their Texas Tech Red Raiders in the college football playoffs! The Longhorns in the group are happy with the win over tamu.

Carsten and I travelled a lot in 2025! Highlights included the Northern Lights in Iceland, a cooking class in Grenada, a hot air balloon ride in Napa and a papal audience in Rome! 

At home we continue to work with Sleep in Heavenly Peace to build and deliver beds to children who need a bed. This year our chapter got 2,400 kids into their own bed! Carsten and I delivered 67 to date with more to come in December.

Carsten's parents made the long trip to Texas to celebrate the holidays with us, we are thrilled to have them back! Heike made cookies, it must be Christmas!!

Thank you for your kind words this year and the love of a wonderful community. We are truly grateful.

Hello from Reykjavik! We are here with my (Sheri) cousins, Christie & Chester, primarily to see the Northern Lights! Leaving Houston a day early to make sure we did not miss our flight due to the big winter storm, we had a little time in Virginia (near Dulles airport) to see the Air & Space museum. This was an unexpected pleasure. Among the 250+ aircraft was the Enola Gay, a Concorde Jet and the Space Shuttle Discovery. As Marieke informed us, there were many cancelled flights out of Dulles and delays were pretty standard. Our 7:40 pm overnight flight to Reykjavik finally took off at about 11:00. Apparently there were only two baggage handlers to unload and load AND shovel the snow that had accumulated. Once loaded, the de-icing took a minute as well.  We arrived at 10:00 am, got our car and headed to our walking food tour. Our guide's name was Burgersagdjckeuegvcn (sic) but we were to call him "burger". We stopped at five different places and enjoyed an appetizer...

More of Iceland

On Friday we had a free day to walk around and explore Reykjavik. We started, as one must, with Hallgrimskirkja . Daytime Night time  Views of inside and from the top: Not sure what the hurry is but worshipers here get their praying done quickly! The streets are lovely this time of year with the lights ... and surprises like this one Santa's washing!. The Sun Voyager is lovely looking over he harbor. The stores have lovely things to offer, we bought a lovely Icelandic Wool blanket. Not sure how useful it will be in Houston?! There were some more useful items (for someone): We walked (trugged) through a sculpture garden. This one, entitled "Grief" was particularly moving. We had some fish for lunch and went back for a little rest. Dinner was pizza, followed by gelato. Early bedtime because we have to be up early for our next adventure! Ok. Getting there.... and itinerary

Good morning from Amsterdam!! Travel is so fun and romantic (cue sappy music).... Not! Leaving Houston was fine and the flight was smooth to Istanbul. We both managed to sleep a bit on the overnight flight (thank you Ambien). Our connection to Amsterdam was a bit late leaving but no problem, or so we thought.... We get to Amsterdam late and it seems as though everyone is experiencing their first day on the job.  I was watching the person driving the jetway - they had no idea where the door was to the plane might be. That took a hot minute. Finally off the plane and walking 1,000 steps to immigration only to be turned around and led back almost to where we started - very odd. So now our entire plane full of people slam the one, lonely immigration officer.  There was a moment when they had an agent there to open another lane only he couldn't open the door. They didn't have the right keys. Good grief! Finally we exit the airport and find the hotel shuttle stand to wait for the la...
