Olympia Corfu
Hello!!
Today we will share all the things from Olympia and Corfu.
In Olympia, which is a region - not a town, we had a walking tour of the Ancient Greek Olympic grounds. Things were very different back 776 BC, the Olympic games were held every four years in the same place honoring the god Zeus.
4th century gymnasium. "Gym" means naked in ancient greek.
The stadium, seating 45,000, and race grounds. The white line was the starting line.
This is place where, every four years, the Olympic torch is lit for the modern Olympic games.
In the fourth century AD, emperor Theodoseus closed all the pagan temples, therefore ending the Olympic games.
We ran into Kristie and Preston Chandler (Carsten's high school buddy) as we were walking into Olympia and they were walking out. They were on a different cruise. LOL
Next stop on the tour was a winery. We had a nice wine tasting with five different organic wines and a snack.
It was a nice day!
Next up - Corfu. We chose a Mountain bike excursion. Exactly why we chose that I could not tell you. It was tough!!
Living in a very FLAT city did not prepare us for the rigorous uphill!
The lady in front of me on the bike ride was messing around with her phone while riding and bounced off the wall. She somehow managed to not crash but it was a scary moment!
It was fun riding down the narrow streets. Joni took this photo on her excursion but it gives you the idea.
Of course the downhill was easier but a little scary at times! It was not an easy ride but we were glad we did it.
We had a look around Corfu and stopped for a snack.
Tomorrow you will hear about Dubrovnik, stay tuned!
