Final days in Iceland

Hello - I, like you, thought that I was done regaling you with our exploits in Iceland.  After all, we had nothing more booked. Wasting no daytime (of which there was very little with sunrise at 11:20 and sunset at 4:00) we decided to go to the Lava Show.

This turned out to be super cool - or super hot - depending on your perspective!  We saw hot lava flowing and learned a lot about lava.

This is the only Lava show of its kind.  Super interesting.
The show was in the harbor area, afterward we went to one of the oldest restaurants in Iceland for lunch.  It was super delicious.  Fish of course!

Next we decided to check out the big museum - Perlan.  It had sections on Glaciers, Volcanos, and Lava, an Ice Cave (at below freezing temps), and a Planetarium show on Northern Lights.  It is a very hands-on museum. Great technology throughout! Here I am in the ice-cave.

It was a good day, all that remains is packing!

On the day of our flight to Dulles we actually had the morning to kill so we decided to brave the weather and the roads to see a Lava Tunnel.  The drive was a little scary but Carsten is the best driver ever!!!! There was a little rain but temps were just above freezing so that spared us icy conditions!

The Lava Tunnels ended up being on everyone's Top 3 list! What a wonderful addition to our itinerary!
How are lava tunnels formed? So glad you asked! Lava flowLava flows from a volcano and spreads out. CoolingThe surface of the lava flow cools and hardens, while the lava inside remains hot. CrustingA rigid crust forms over the cooled surface, insulating the lava inside. Tube formationThe hot lava inside the crust flows and can develop walls around it. EmptyingWhen the lava flow stops, the lava empties out, leaving behind a tube

the ice formations looked like little crowds of men
this is what the sides of the tunnel look like before rocks start to fall. as the lava cools it leaves a line - think of it like the ring in your bathtub! LOL
I was afraid there would be another torturous truck ride to the tunnel - happily the building was just in front of the entrance to the lava tunnel.

Sometimes the best days are unplanned and you happen upon something extraordinary!

Top 5 (Sheri): 1. Seeing the Northern Lights 2. Sky Lagoon (I could have done that every day - is there a "season" pass? 3. Lava Tunnel 4. Food Tour 5. Ice Cave

Top 5 (Carsten): 1. Seeing the Northern Lights 2. Food Tour 3. Sky Lagoon 4. Lava Tunnel 5.Perlan Museum.

Home now doing all of the "life chores".

Take Care,

Sheri & Carsten
