Cape Town, South Africa

Hi - we flew to Cape Town from Johannesburg on Saturday night late - Sunday morning we began to explore this vibrant city.

This is Table Rock - the famous landmark of CT.

we did a helicopter flight to see the sights from the sky.

The mountains around CT are not the tallest but they are sure beautiful!

A view of Cape Point and the Soccer stadium from the recent World Cup.

Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island. Clock Tower.

It is certainly not "fun" to visit a prison but for us a visit to South Africa is not complete without at least trying to gain some understanding of the struggles and the history of this country.  Robben Island is the prison island where Nelson Mandela, along with many other political prisoners were living out their sentence.  The guide, in purple, was himself once incarcerated at Robben Island for five years for political activisim.  He gave us a view / understanding of what life was like for the prisoners.  It of course was difficult but as a community they lifted each other up in so many ways.  It was quite inspiring!

This is the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his 27 years of incarceration.  At even a young man in his 20's he was already a leader amoung the men.

Today we went to Franschhoek area to see what South African wine was all about.  They have a tram/bus system that you ride to get to the various wineries.  Here we are after one or maybe two stops ... LOL

The scenery was amazing - South Africa continues to amaze us ...

We had a lot of wine but not all of these glasses.

third stop.

this was our ride.

It was such a lovely day - the weather was perfect and the atmosphere was sublime.  I really cannot say enough about Cape Town.  It is a wonderful city.

Tomorrow we will go to the top of Table Mountain and finish up our shopping.  Another busy day!

Take care - more soon!
