Paros and Heraklion (Crete)

So, anyone who know Norwegian knows that their wi-fi leaves a lot to be desired.  So, when the software uploaded the pictures in reverse order we really are left with no choice but to tell the story backward.

We begin at the end...

This is on the island of Crete - City of Heraklion.

Morozini Fountain.  Four lion heads spitting water.  This was built during the Venetian Period in 1629 AD.  There were five gelato stands nearby so we had a selection: Pistachio, Triple Chocolate, Cookies & Cream and Mocha (there were 4 of us... no judging!).

Palace of Knossos is the archeological site famous on Crete, the grand capital of Minoan Crete.  First settlements dates to about 7,000 BC, first palace to 1900 BC

The story of the Minotaur is interesting in Mythology.  Basically there was a white bull that was a gift to the King of Minos from Poseidon.  The King was supposed to sacrifice the bull but he liked it so he sacrificed a different bull hoping Poseidon wouldn't notice.  Well, he did and he caused Pasiphae to fall in love with the bull.  She got the local engineer to build a fake, hollow cow which she entered and the bull mated with the bull (her).  She gave birth to the Minotaur, a creature half man - half bull.  Google it.

The Palace of Knossos was interesting but wow it was hot today!  We are all super tired!  Hilmer did great walking over uneven pathways and navigating lots of steps - it was not easy!

Venetian Sea Fortress

Yesterday was Paros.  This is a small island that is a popular spot for Greeks on vacation.  We really liked the more laid-back vibe.  We covered a lot of area in the little town.  No excursion - just wandering about.

The Archaic Temple of Athena - from 6th century BC.

Frankish Castle, built in 1260 AD - looks like kids built it with their random block set.  Circles, wheels, etc.

Scenes from Paros

the Ekatontapyliani Church.  Orthodox Greek.

Battery is on dead. Time to post!

Tomorrow is Santorini!  Hope there are not four ships there tomorrow!

Stay Cool!
