Hello again!

Our last day in Italy was spent on the beach at the Adriatic Shore.  It was about an hour drive on some crazy small, windy, pothole-filled roads.  The sun was out and the water was perfect.  This picture was early in the day, more people did show up - it was lively but not crowded.  So nice!

On Saturday we drove to Rome and said goodbye to Ulf & Heike as they left for home.  Roslyn, Hilmer, Carsten and I flew to Athens to spend one night before our Greek Cruise.

First stop was Rhodes, Greece.  Carsten and I had a lovely excursion that had stops at a Mosque, a Synagogue and a Catholic Church.

This is the City Wall and Palace which was built around 1490.  The old city is very well preserved.

Legend incorrectly asserts that Colossus stood here, straddling the harbor entrance.  Movies have perpetuated this assertion ... it is not true.  The Colossus stood inside the old town before falling down after about 50 years due to an earthquake.

Inside of the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary.

Overlook view of "New" Rhodes.

Entering the old town through the city gate.

Bazaar Street has more than 1,000 shops.

The only Synagogue remaining in Rhodes.  Before 1938 there was a thriving Jewish community in Rhodes.  The Fascists came and half of the 4,000 Jews left Rhodes.  Those remaining were sent to concentration camps in Germany in 1945. Only 160 returned and today there are only 37 Jews in Rhodes.

GELATO!

 More to come!
