What do you do every day while retired?

 Hi,

We get this question a lot. Carsten and I try to be gone a lot - as you can tell by the blog - but we certainly spend a lot of time at home.

We like to volunteer our time - here are some of the charities we are involved with:

Lutherhill (a church summer camp in LaGrange, Texas).  This camp is about 1.5 hours from our house.  We go up and do projects for them as needed.  Here we have before and after pictures of the Archery structure that was expanded.  We gave it a new coat of paint.

Houston Food Bank is another favorite charity.  We volunteer at the food bank warehouse from time to time - I think we have done every job they have! That is the "front" end of the food process.

For the "back" end of the process - getting the food to those who need help.

Every other Thursday we go to Pathways Church and distribute food to those in need.  The foodbank delivers 7-9 different food items for distribution.

Finally, Sleep in Heavenly Peace.  This charity makes and delivers beds to children who do not have one.  Their slogan is "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town."

We do deliveries sometimes - some of the beds are bunk beds, others are single beds - depending on what the family needs.  The beds include bedding, pillows, sheets and comforter as shown below.

Sometimes we participate in "Builds".  This is an assembly line process that starts with cutting the wood and continues through drilling, sanding, assembling, staining/treating and branding (with the SHP logo).  On a typical Saturday build 60-75 beds are prepared.

Of course we are both involved with our church in various ways.

We really enjoy spending time with these worthwhile charities.  If you want to know more about them click below.

If you get to the end of the year and have room in your charity for a new group these are a great option!

Whew!

Certainly there is time left for other endeavors - we like to ride our bikes around Houston - the city has really done a great job with the bike trails.

One of our favorite destinations is St. Arnold's Brewery North of Downtown Houston.  They have a great porch, good beers, and delicious food!

The Astros are not doing so great right now but we are not fair-weather fans so we still show up for a game now and again.

We love to play cards so we spend time with my mom & dad doing that - our favorites are 3-1-3 (a rummy game) and "10 & Back" a devilishly hard "trick" game.

Finally, our favorite thing to do is spend time with Marieke, Alex, Austin and Jamie plus the grand-dogs!  We are happy they call Houston home as well.

I hope that answers your question!

We will be leaving again soon on vacation - I will preview that trip in a few weeks!

Take care,

Sheri & Carsten
