Starting out in Kaua'i

Aloha again - we have traveled over to Kaua'i and are really enjoyed our first few days here!

Our final morning in Hilo was amusing as we sat down to breakfast with a couple we had not met - guess where they were from ..... really .... guess ..... Germany & Switzerland!  There were only 3 rooms at this B&B and so many were Germans! LOL

We drove across the "saddle" between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on Hawai'i to get back to the Kona airport for our flight.  This is Mauna Kea (a volcano).

It was a long day of travel, as our connection to Kaua'i was delayed. Oh well ... we made it to our place - the view from the balcony and a shot of "our" beach.

It is quite nice and feels like home.  Some of you know that we have roosters behind our house that crow indiscriminately (i.e., not just at dawn) - well, here on Kaua'i there are so many roosters.  We hear them all day long (and very early in the morning, which is a problem with no A/C requiring the windows to be open at night to cool the place down!)

On Thursday we took a helicopter tour by Jack Harter Helicopters - it was amazing.  We saw Waimea Canyon, known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific", and the Na' Pali Coast.
This is Kaua'i Coffee - actually the largest coffee grower in the islands.  We are going there today for a tour.

we also flew into a dormant volcano

These flat-top trees are from Africa.  They are not indigenous to Hawai'i and are causing problems - the local authorities are working on a plan to get rid of them ... quite a large task ....

After the helicopter tour we explored our beach and did some relaxing!

On Friday we had a 7-hour boat tour/snorkeling excursion.  It started at 6am and we had a 40 minute drive to get there - lucky? for us the rooster got us up in time for the early start!
Rewarded the early start with a nice sunrise!

It was an amazing day with pretty calm seas, good snorkeling, good breakfast and lunch and lots of sea life - we saw manta rays, dolphins and so many humpback whales.  While snorkeling we saw an Eagle Ray and a Hawai'ian Monk Seal (only 1,500 remaining) swimming below us! It was so cool.  He was very curious and checking us out.

this is the "key-hole" on Lehua - can you see the silhouette of the face?

We saw many humpback whales - it was really incredible!

After snorkeling, the bar was open - Carsten's beer came with this helpful warning -

I'm not sure we need this warning - he is German after all - he is not going to spill his beer!

You know how I love signs - this one, near our beach, is helpful -

Goodness!

Never fear - the surf was nice and the water was cool!

That's it for now - we are off to the Kauai Coffee plantation and then Poiou Beach for some snorkeling and beach time!
